I'm a professor in Science of Education, Institute of Education, Tsinghua University. I use my personal and professional backgrounds to explore issues of social consciousness, educational issues in China and the areas beyond. My career includes teaching, research and administrative experience in Tsinghua University, while including Fulbright Scholar in MIT (2007.07-2008.08), DAAD visiting professor in RWTH Aachen, Germany (2005.09-2005.12) and University of British Columbia, Canada (2005.03-06), and a visiting scholar in University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign(2002.09-2003.10).
Inspired to make a real landscape in Chinese learner’s lives and the society in which they live, I lead interdisciplinary research projects to explore three aspects of sciences of education: the liberal arts education of Chinese college students, global excellence of engineering students, the k-12 school reforms in China – especially the education equality issues in China’s urbanization movement. My major works to the field include elaborations on theories that conceptualize the relationship between liberal arts education and specialized education in transformation of colleges and universities. My more recent studies, frame the updated liberal education theories and practice with K-12 school education and colleges with students’ curriculum and learning experience, applying quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
On the basis of past research experiences, my current research projects seek to do the follow-up study on the Undergraduate Top-notch Innovative Talents Education programs (like the "strengthening basic disciplines plan",强基计划), and provide the evidence-based promotion strategies for k-12 schools, colleges and their communities to adjust effectively in a high technology world. I am also leading an interdisciplinary research team on the Project on Language Proficiency Test of Chinses as A Second Language, which is to explore an independent research project of Tsinghua University and sponsored by the Institute of Future Education Evaluation, Tsinghua University.

Higher Education. Prof. LI has systematically studied the basic concepts, theoretical framework and modes of liberal arts education in China. She published the books General Education: The ideal of University Education(1999), Harvard Red Book(Translation Version,2008). Her articles also are published in key academic journals such as Xinhua literature Extract , Peking University Education Review, etc.. Based on these research experiences, she engages in variety of academic service for Government-University-School policy consulting.
Basic education Reform. With concerning the top-notch innovative talents on undergraduate level, Prof. LI focuses on K-12 schooling prior experience. She did researches on topics of the 0-3 early child development, the primary and secondary schools running modes in Beijing and the physique and academic performance of teenagers in Western China area. The series of studies discussed the rationale of early childhood development service supply, core literacy education for young people, and other key issues of k-12 school education reform.
Prof. LI initiated An Interdisciplinary Research Project in 2017.The research team, who are trained in Education Measurement, Linguistics, Psychology, Information Science, focuses on developing and designing a Chinese language Proficiency Test (CLPT). This team has set up the largest Chinese-database Platform railing on collecting main types of Chinese lexicon, 7 Chinese text corpus, 11 widely populated Chinese tests, and provided a Chinese academic Lexicon through Machine learning. The peculiar contribution of this team is to frame an internationally recognized standard to describe Chinese language competence and levels, which is the research basic to CLPT.
Based on previous research experience, Prof. LI focuses more on future learning or education paradigm. Prof. LI and her colleagues try to answer the fundamental questions of how people learn in the online setting and how to facilitate more effective online learning through collecting the real multi-modal learning data originated from the online learning platform(Xuetang Zaixian).
Engineering education. Prof. LI deeply participated in the cooperation research projects on engineering education with contacts of UNESCO, IFEE. She’s undertaking World engineering education report II (UNESCO) as one of the author team. Her concerns include China "excellent engineer" competency model and the issues on the shift on training mechanism, curriculum and teaching. The book "New Perspectives on Engineers and Engineering Education" won the Sixth National Award for Outstanding Award in Humanities and Social Sciences in Colleges and Universities.
