Dr. HAN Xibin is a Tenured Professor and Vice Dean for research and international affairs in the Institute of Education at Tsinghua University. He is one of the co-editors of the Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE) and an Editorial Board member of the Internet and Higher Education. He served as the president of the Society of International Chinese in Educational Technology (SICET) in 2018. He was a member of expert team of the UNESCO project: Building the Capacity of Higher Education Institutions in Asia-Pacific Area for Blended Learning in 2015-2017.

Education Background

He received his doctorate in application of artificial intelligence into agricultural policy making at Beijing Agricultural Engineering University (now called China Agricultural University) in 1993. He earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree on Agricultural Engineering at Northwestern Agricultural University (now called Northwest A&F University) in 1985 and 1989. He studied as a visiting scholar at Virginia Tech and Stanford University in 2011.

Work Experience

He was an assistant professor when graduated from the Northwestern Agricultural University in 1985, and started his researches on educational education in Tsinghua University since 2000.

Teaching Courses

He is regularly involved in teaching courses and mentoring graduate students in the master’s, Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs at the Institute of Education. He instructs three courses for postgraduate students, Design Based Research Method, Cognitive Theory and Learning Sciences, and Multimedia Learning and Human-Computer Interaction. He also lectures one course for undergraduate students in minor program on learning sciences and technology.

Research Field & Overview

HAN Xibin’s research focuses on e-learning system development and adoption, blended learning implementation, and institutional teaching innovation through technology in higher education and vocational education. In the last 20 years, he and his team have made outstanding contributions to China’s education reform through technology in universities and vocational schools, providing theoretical research, technology development, and policy consultation, among many other ground-breaking initiatives.

In research, he proposed a pedagogical model for constructing an e-learning system, a systems model for blended learning, a framework for implementing blended learning in higher education, and a theoretical framework for IT adoption in vocational education.

In terms of technology development, the design method and technical framework of an e-learning system were proposed, and the "Tsinghua Education Online (THEOL)" series of education software has been developed.

In terms of policy consultation, he has been responsible for formulating the national standards and providing reports for the Chinese government to inform its policymaking. For example, the standards for developing digital campuses in vocational colleges and schools were adopted as an official document by the Ministry of Education of China in 2015 and 2020. Han and his team also provided the first report on IT implementation in vocational education in China in 2018, the report on online teaching in vocational colleges and schools during the COVID-19 period in the spring semester of 2020. Han and his team are now working on the medium and long-term development plan for IT implementation in vocational education in China, as commissioned by the Ministry of Education. He has also been providing e-learning guidelines for universities and vocational colleges/schools since 2012, guiding large-scaled IT-supported education and teaching reforms.

Dr. HAN was granted awards for his research and teaching, such as the Top Class Prize of the Sixteenth China National Multimedia Software Competition in 2012 and the Third Class Award of the Beijing Science and Technology Research Award in 2014 for his studies on THEOL e-learning platform; the Second Class Award of the Sixth China National Teaching Achievement Awards in 2009 for his research and teaching in modern educational technology area; the Promotion Effect Award of Tsinghua University for his achievements in scientific research transfer to industry in 2014; and the Award for Excellence Teacher and Mentor of Graduate Students in Tsinghua University in 2016.
