Elaine Walsh is Head of Postgraduate Development and a Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School at Imperial College London. She oversees its programme of development activities for taught and research postgraduate students. This is underpinned by research which focuses on the doctoral experience and she has recently published on: creativity; well-being; entrepreneurship and evaluation of skills development workshops.

Elaine graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Engineering Science, has an MSc in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio and a postgraduate diploma in Careers Guidance from the University of Reading. She is a former Chartered Mechanical Engineer. Her industrial career included appointments at BAE systems in the UK and at GE Aircraft Engines in the US. She taught engineering science at the University of Bedfordshire before joining Imperial’s careers advisory service in 1998. She moved to the Graduate School in 2004.

Creativity in science and engineering research

This research explored understanding and attitudes towards creativity amongst science and engineering researchers. In addition it captured advice from PhD students, postdocs and experienced academics about the environmental factors that facilitate more creative research.

Entrepreneurship and the doctoral student

Carried out jointly with Tsinghua university, this project explored the views of science and engineering doctoral students based either at Tsinghua or at Imperial College London. The results showed differences, particularly in the perceived barriers to entrepreneurial behaviour.
